Backyard Bird Watching

Backyard Bird Watching is a hobby that is seen today as dull. However, creating the proper atmosphere to attract these birds can be a delight as well as a challenge. Backyard Birds migrate at different times of year, therefore if your yard is properly developed, you can have birds all year round. Occasionally, if you’re lucky, the backyard birds will adopt your yard as their home and nest there. If you follow the tips outlined below, your backyard will become a relaxing place for you and the birds that choose to drop by.

When considering creating a backyard appealing to birds, there are 3 major factors: Plants, Bird Food, and Shelter.

Plants

Backyard birds are attracted by the different plants you have available, therefore the more varied your garden is the more birds you will attract. Offering an interesting layout will pull more backyard birds in, and create a more visual appeal for you. They also need trees and plants so that they feel safe hiding in. If you have only smaller plants and no trees, they may feel that they are not protected from any of the numerous predators that backyard birds must watch out for.

Bird Food

Backyard birds need a variety of foods to stay healthy. Offering them different plants that grow berries, seeds, and other foods will attract a more varied group of backyard birds. By having a few bird feeders instead of just one, you are also making sure the birds will not have to fight to get a spot at the bird feeder. Another key feature to a backyard bird’s diet is water. Having a bird bath allows birds to drink as well as clean themselves. This is a feature that appeals to many types of birds.

Shelter

Backyard Birds need to feel safe in order for them to come into your yard. If there is no where for the backyard birds to hide safely, they will not come back into your yard. Offering larger plants for them to hide in, as well as bird houses will create a safe atmosphere for the birds to enjoy.

If you have appealed to all of these needs of the backyard bird, they will be much more likely to come back, or even consider nesting there. This will turn your backyard into a wilderness resort that other animals will consider visiting.
