Keeping Your Pets Clean

Inside Bath Time

Detachable shower and sink heads is a feature that will prove to be indispensable for your pet’s bath time. Choose a shampoo based on your pet’s skin type. Whenever you visit your vet, be sure to ask which type of shampoo they recommend.

Once you have gotten your beloved pet into the tub, take the nozzle and check the temperature of the water. It should be warm to luke warm and definitely NOT hot. Rinse down your pet to loosen up all the dirt that has accumulated on his fur and also to get them nice and wet.

Once your pet is all soaked up, take the recommended shampoo and apply a generous amount to your hand. Lather up your pet around the neck, on top of his head, around his back, tail, and legs. Make sure you avoid his eyes and to really work in the shampoo.

Now that you have your pet all lathered up with suds, it’s time for another rinsing. Start at his neck and work your way down all the while avoiding his ears and eyes. Be sure to get all the shampoo out because leaving some behind will start to irritate your pet’s skin.

Applying a special coat conditioner is optional but develops a healthy shine. Apply it same as the shampoo, avoiding his eyes and ears, and rinse from the neck down.

With that done it’s time to dry off your pet. Take about two towels and wrap it around your pet to dry off the excess amounts of water. If your dog has a light coat of fur, provide a good pat down with the towels and he will be dry in not time. If your dog has a thick coat of fur, it might become a bit tricky. You must use a pet blow dryer, not with yours because it’s too hot, that is available at any pet store to properly dry off your dog or cat. Use a brush in the process to brush out all the tangles.

Outdoor Bath Time

Use the same guidelines as with the indoor bath but keep one thing in mind. The garden hose you are going to use does not have any temperature control. The water might become very cold very quickly.

The Sensitive Areas

Your pet’s ears and eyes are the most sensitive areas. So, special attention should be given to them during bath time.

The eyes should be washed very gently. Take a warm, damp cotton face cloth and wipe around their eyes removing any dirt that has accumulated.

For the ears, it’s a different story. They should be cleaned at minimum once a month to provide protection against infections. Take a small cotton ball or face cloth and dip it in mineral oil or ear solution. Wipe around inside but DO NOT go to deep. Just gently clean around the visible areas.

At the end, I usually provide my pet’s with their favorite treats to reward them. It’s a good idea because this conditioning helps in future bath times.
