How to Take Care of Your Dog in Winter?

calendar  Nov 30, 2022

Winter is here and it's time to upgrade your pet care routine along with your wardrobe! Being a pet parent, here are some quick tips you must go through to make your furry friend feel more comfortable as the weather go dreary.

Dog Winter Care Tips

  • Keep your dog indoors. Dogs can suffer from hypothermia and frostbite in winter. Even if they love staying outdoors, it is always a good idea to limit their outdoor time to protect them from the ill effects of the cold weather.
  • Provide a warm and comfortable space. Dogs need a cosy place to snuggle up. Prepare a comfy dog bed for them with a warm blanket and they would thank you for saving them from the chilly floors!
  • Upgrade your dog's wardrobe. Make your dog's wardrobe arsenal winter-ready with dog sweaters and dog jackets. This is especially necessary for dogs with thinner hair like Chihuahuas, Greyhounds, and Dachshunds.
  • Protect your dog from fleas and ticks. Contradictory to the belief, fleas and ticks do not vanish in winter. They may easily get on to your dog and infest your home. So, don't forget the flea and tick prevention treatments.
  • Be cautious of the slippery ice. While taking your buddy out on a walk during the snowy season, watch out for slippery surfaces that may harm their paws as well as for frozen lakes that may have thinner ice that can break down.
  • Protect the skin and coat. Adding a layer of natural moisturizers like coconut oil or fish oil to your dog's coat. This will not only prevent the coat from drying out but also leave it glossy and shining.
  • Take extra care of the paws and nose. Paws and noses often dry up quickly in the winter season. Do not forget to apply paw balm and snout butter to these delicate areas.
  • Keep your dog hydrated. Make sure your dog has access to a water bowl if he spends time in your yard alone, as dehydration maybe accelerated during the low temperatures.
  • Consider giving joint supplements. Joint aches may escalate in winters, especially for senior dogs. Ensure effective joint care during winter with dog joint supplements like Mobiflex Joint Care or Sea Flex Joint Function.
  • Beat the chill with winter dog foods. Inclusion of foods like coconut oil, vitamin-C rich fruits, warm chicken soups, and stew to your dog's diet will keep them from going lethargic and gaining extra pounds diet in the cold months.

As a caregiver, keep the above tips in mind and make the cold weather more enjoyable for your furry companion. But, to take better winter care for your dog, you should also be cautious when the weather is not favorable for your dog. Go through the below chart to know when it is too cold for your dog.
