5 Best Home Remedies To Get Rid Of Ticks And Fleas On Dogs

calendar  Apr 26, 2022

Fleas and ticks are vexatious parasites that feast on your dog’s blood and cause itching. Common flea and tick remedies include collars, spot-on, shampoos, dips, and sprays. However, you can also consider these easy and natural ways to get rid of those nasty parasites:

1. Lemon Shampoo

An easy and natural way to get rid of fleas is to use homemade shampoo. Bathing your dog in lemon juice shampoo will not only protect him from external parasites, but will also give him a refreshed and revitalized appearance.

How To Use?

  1. Mix ½ a cup of freshly squeezed lemon to 2 cups of warm water.
  2. Add a little amount of dog shampoo to the mixture.
  3. bathe your dog with the shampoo mixture.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Another simplest method of eliminating fleas is ACV. Small parasites like fleas and ticks are pretty scared of ACV and simple spraying of its mixture on your dog’s coat would be enough to keep these critters away.

How To Use?

  1. Take an empty spray bottle and add equal parts (1:1) of apple cider vinegar and water to it.
  2. Spray this on your pet’s fur, avoiding the eyes, nose, mouth and any broken skin area.

3. Salt Or Diatomaceous Earth

Salt, Baking Soda or Diatomaceous Earth can draw the moisture out of the parasites’ body. These natural remedies suffocate the buggers by sucking the moisture out of them and starving them to death.

How To Use?

  1. Take some salt or diatomaceous earth and sprinkle it on your floor and carpets where you think fleas are hiding themselves.
  2. Let sit overnight and vacuum it up in the morning along with the dead fleas and ticks.

4. Garlic

Garlic is a very useful remedy for fleas and ticks, when used appropriately. Since garlic is excreted through your dog’s skin, it repels fleas and ticks.

How To Use?

  1. Add garlic as a supplement to your dog’s food in optimal amounts to keep fleas and ticks at bay.
  2. But remember, garlic contains sulfoxides and disulfides which are harmful for dogs if consumed in large quantities.

5. Coconut Oil

It’s the safest remedy for fleas and ticks on dogs! The fats present in coconut oil are composed of the fatty acid lauric acid; coat the flea's exoskeleton in an oily coating. When the flea comes into contact with the coconut oil, it suffocates and dies eventually.

How To Use?

  1. Take some coconut oil on palm and work it lightly onto your dog’s skin.
  2. However, make sure you do this in the outdoors, as critters may leap out of the fur due to the lauric acid present in it as soon as you do this.

Opt Natural!

Flea and tick prevention is the best way to save your dog from infestations. Furthermore, natural remedies eliminate the possibility of side effects associated with chemical-based products. The natural remedies mentioned here are effective and safe, but are not enough. Therefore, its always a safe bet to keep your dogs on flea and tick preventive treatments along with these natural remedies .
