Parvo 2c Demystified

There has been the newest outbreak of Parvovirus in Australia that has compromised the lives of many dogs till yet. It is Parvo 2c virus that has dreaded most of the pet owners there. The reason for distress is that the cure hasn’t been discovered yet. This virus can only be prevented through vaccination. So, let’s dig deep to get the clarity about this horrid virulent strain.

What is Parvo 2c?  

Parvo 2c is another variant strain of Canine Parvo Virus (CPV) which is a highly contagious viral infection that affects the gastrointestinal tract of the dogs. It interrupts the functioning of the rapidly dividing cells of the tract thereby causing gastrointestinal illness like vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, etc. A dog infected with the virus may even stop eating.

Canine Parvo Virus 2c can be differentiated from the other form 2a and 2b only under the microscope. There is just one DNA strand in their genetic makeup that differentiates these variants. Therefore, the symptoms are similar and so are the prevention methods. 

How is the Canine Parvo Virus - 2c spread?

Parvo -2c is spread in multiple ways that include:

• Direct contact with an infected dog
• Contact with the contaminated stool of other dog or animals
• Through environment
• Through contaminated food
• Contaminated water
• Collars and leashes that are contaminated
• From pet caretakers that handle infected dogs

Unvaccinated dogs that are kept in dirty shelters or kennels are at high risk of contracting the virus.

How is the virus diagnosed and managed?

Parvo 2c infected dog shows very similar symptoms to Parvo 2a and b. Only a fecal test can reveal the variant of the virus that has infected the pet. CPV-2c is not curable but there are vaccines available to strengthen the immune system of the dog against the virus. The dog that is already infected is separated from the rest of the healthy dogs. Biosecurity measures are taken for maintaining the hygiene of caretakers and sanitizing the environment.

How to prevent the virus?

Parvo 2c can be prevented through vaccination. However, an unexpected outbreak in some weak dogs can happen when they come in contact with the heavily infected transmitter.  Thus it is important to increase the immunity of your pet if you want to prevent the viral infection.

Preventive methods:

• A well-balanced meal must be fed to the pet so he gets the daily required nutrition.
• Supplements can also be provided to boost the immune system of your dog.
• Avoid shaking hands with people that handle ill dogs. Else, wash them immediately.
• Maintain proper hygiene. Groom your pet regularly. Wash his bedding weekly.
• The place surrounding your house should be clean.
• Do not take your pet to dirty dog parks that may have lots of litter.
• Provide immunity-boosting foods to your dog.
• Last but not the least; get your dog vaccinated for Parvo 2c if you haven’t done that already.
