Dewormers For Dogs and Cats

Be it any dog or cat parent, the moment you say worms, you have both their attention and curiosity  because worms are the parasites that live in the body and feed on the food and nutrients and then cause trouble like general poor appearance, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss or poor growth, dry hair and blood in the feces. Obviously, you don't want your beloved companion to be in this situation because pets are the ones who control the vibe of the house. As a result, you always look for the best and effective treatments for your pet but you often get confused. So, to clear your confusion systematically, let’s learn about these worms, how they infest, symptoms and the best treatments.

Types of Worms

Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, heartworms are the most common types of worms that infest your pet. However, in cats, heartworms are not found and whipworms are very rare.

Round shaped worms like hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms are known as nematodes and the flatworms are known as cestodes.

Infestation and Diagnosis

These parasites are generally passed on to the puppies and kittens by their mothers in the womb itself. In most of the cases, they can infest through feces contact, playing in the soil, getting in contact with rodents and dirty environment. Tapeworms can be transferred through a flea bite as well.

Diagnosis is the key thing in the treatment because if it’s not carried out on properly and correct time, things can get worse. Diagnosis can be done by examining the feces under a microscope. Tapeworms can be seen with bare eyes but whipworms, hookworms, and roundworms are difficult to see through naked eyes. It's better to consult a vet for diagnosis as soon as you observe symptoms of worm infestation in your pet.

Symptoms can be subtle initially like, your puppy or kitten start eating more to compensate for the worms. You might see it as a positive sign but this can be an alarm for severe worm infestation. Along with this, there can be many symptoms like

  • Dry fur coat
  • Diarrhea
  • Lethargy
  • Weight loss
  • Vomiting
  • Coughing
  • Blood in feces

  • Bloated belly
