calendar  Jun 15, 2018

Our world is filled with fleas and ticks. They operate in warm climates, make life a living hell for our pets and cause various diseases. It is essential that we use preventives to protect our pets from these nasty parasites. There are many different types of treatments that are available that will help you fight fleas and ticks. Some of them are oral treatments, topical treatments, natural treatments, homeopathic treatments and many more. The most commonly used treatment is topical treatment as they provide a month-long protection after a single application. Nowadays, various topical treatments are available to us and Activyl and Frontline Plus are two well known topical products. Let's have a look at how these treatments work and which product yields more effective results.

Activyl

Activyl is a topical flea treatment that contains the ingredient ‘Indoxacarb’. It is developed using advanced technology and uses the bio-activation method to stop flea population. It is effective even when your dog gets wet or when he faces direct exposure to sunlight. When applied to dog’s coat, Activyl works by using a method called bioactivation, a method in which the active ingredient, Indoxacarb is fully activated by using the flea’s own enzymes. It is easy to apply and does not have any side effects.

Here are some key points about Activyl:

  • Offers flea protection for up to 30 days
  • Waterproof
  • Quick-drying
  • Kills adult fleas and larvae and disrupts flea life cycle
  • Affordable
  • Remains effective after exposure to sunlight

Frontline Plus

Frontline Plus is created using two ingredients i.e. Fipronil and S-methoprene. Fipronil is an adulticide that kills adult fleas and ticks while S-methoprene is an insect growth regulator that disrupts the life cycle of fleas and ticks. Frontline Plus is the most popular treatment to treat fleas and ticks all over the world.

Here are some key points about Frontline Plus:

  • Kills fleas within 12 hours of administration
  • Kills all the stages of flea life cycle
  • Waterproof
  • Cheaper than other treatments
  • Kills ticks and chewing lice within 48 hours

It's difficult to decide which product is best for your pet. A recent study by Merck Animal Health compared the efficacy of two products. When tested for a 2-month application period Activyl killed 99% of the fleas on pets whereas Frontline Plus managed to kill only 54% of fleas. This was the result given by one study of the products. In order to decide which product is best for your pet, consult your veterinarian and heed his advice.
