Dogs Eye Hygiene - Tips To Follow

calendar  Jul 20, 2018

After a long day when you get back home and hold your dog’s face to caress him, you find a yellow-greenish gunk in his eyes? That yucky gunk is eye discharge which indicates that your pet’s eye is infected or rather you have not been cleaning him properly.

Eye hygiene in dogs is very important to maintain as they are equally prone to allergies and infections like human eyes. Our dogs also suffer from conjunctivitis, excessive watery eyes and dry eyes just like us. Their eyes become pink due to bacterial infection which causes excessive blinking and itching. Their tear ducts also get infected which causes excess water discharge in their eyes. Moreover, keratoconjunctivitis in dogs also leads to dryness and itching in their eyeballs.  Therefore, it is imperative to maintain eye hygiene of your furry pal because an eye infection is a serious condition which can sadly lead to blindness in dogs. So, follow these tips and stick to them to keep your dog’s eyes healthy and twinkling.

Keep the Eyes Clean And Moist

How to do this? Use a damp cotton ball to gently clean the corners of your dog’s eyes to prevent deposition of discharge near the tear ducts. The leftover discharge can lead to bacterial infection thus make sure to wipe off the gunk completely. Once you are done with the cleaning, add some eye drops or eye wash solution to retain the moisture of his eyes.

Trim The Hair Around The Dog’s Eyes

Bacteria can also enter the eyes through the surrounding hair, therefore, trim them short. However, make sure you do it carefully using a blunt-nosed scissors. Also, remove the lash that had grown inwards as it causes watery eyes and irritation.

Protect The Eyes While Bathing or Swimming

Harsh chemicals in skin care products can cause severe irritation and itching in the dog’s eyes. Hence, bathing your pet with the products that have harmful chemicals must be deliberately avoided. You should only use those shampoos and conditioners on your furry friend that are specially formulated for pets.

Don’t Let Your Dog Hang His Head Out While You Drive

We certainly enjoy watching a dog with his head hung out of a car window. However, open car windows are an invitation to the pollens, air dust, debris, insects and bacteria to brush your dog’s eyes. They can cause severe damage to the delicate eyeballs, leading to poor vision in dogs. Moreover, heavy winds while driving also leaches moisture of eyes leading to irritation and dryness, so better avoid it.

Don’t you love those twinkling eyes and wagging tail of your pet? Certainly!.. we all do. Therefore, to let him stay so, we must pay attention to his eye health as well. Use products that are gentle and maintain a regular eye cleaning routine. Still, if you find any discharge or excess water in his eyes, consult the vet to get the correct treatment.
