Use of Fluralaner in Dogs and Cats

Pet parenting is not a walk in the park, especially with insects like fleas and ticks around. However, the ever-evolving veterinary medicine has made the life of a pet parent a bit easier, in terms of protection against these pests. These days you have multiple parasitic treatments available, that too in different forms. One of the popular, vet-recommended antiparasitic drugs is fluralaner. Since the approval of this drug, it has been widely used to protect dogs and cats against a variety of parasites.

This blog provides all the necessary information about this remedy. Read through to know more about it.

Fluralaner – An Overview

Administered in the form of oral or topical treatments, Fluralaner is a clinically proven, systemic insecticide and acaricide. Meaning it controls external parasites such as fleas and ticks by killing them or hindering them from growing. The drug was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for dogs in May 2014 and for cats in November 2019 with cautions of potential adverse effects on both animal species.

When used in any of the available treatment forms (topical or oral), fluralaner treats and prevents flea and tick infestations in cats and dogs.

Fluralaner – Action Mechanism

Fluralaner belongs to the isoxazoline class of drugs, is recommended for systemic use and acts as an 'ectoparasiticide', meaning it kills parasites that reside on the animals' skin and fur.

When administered through the oral route, fluralaner immediately enters the animal's bloodstream post-ingestion. Topical administration of the fluralaner lets the drug penetrate the pet's skin and mix with the tissue fluids.

After administration, fluralaner eliminates parasites (fleas and ticks) by acting on their nervous system. It blocks the normal movement of the ions (associated with gamma-aminobutyric acid & glutamate). This causes the uncontrolled activity of the central nervous system of parasites, resulting in the paralysis and death of the insects in the end.

Fluralaner – Parasitic Coverage

Being an ectoparasiticide, Fluralaner protects against parasites that live externally of its host including,

  • Fleas
  • Black-legged ticks
  • American dog ticks
  • Brown dog ticks
  • Asian longhorned ticks
  • Lone star ticks

Fluralaner - Effectiveness

Fluralaner is a fast-acting component. After administration, the drug is known to begin action and starts killing fleas from 2-4 hours and achieves more than 95% efficacy against fleas from 8 hours to 48 hours on dogs and cats. It provides more than 90% effectiveness against a variety of tick species from 48 to 72 hours post-treatment or infestation.

Fluralaner - Animal Safety & Precautions

Fluralaner belongs to the isoxazoline class of chemicals which is known to be associated with neurologic reactions such as seizures, tremors, ataxia, etc.

It is recommended using this component with care, strictly in consultation with an expert, more so in dogs and cats who have experienced seizures or other neurologic reactions in the past.
